Art Week Joburg 2018 – What’s Your Story? Children’s Exhibition at Eyethu Art Space
Date: 9 September 2018
Time: 12:00- 15:00
Venue: Eyethu Art Space
00651 Tshabalala Street, Mofolo Central, Soweto, Johannesburg
What’s Your Story? – an exhibition co-curated by Phumzile Twala, Bukhosi Nyathi and Simangaliso Sibiya at Eyethu Art Space in Mofolo, Soweto opens on Sunday 9 September 2018 at 12pm.
The exhibition features works by artists from Room 13 South Africa, a performance piece with visuals by the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum Book Club and a video installation by the Born Free Workshop.
What’s Your Story is a unique collaboration between Eyethu Art Space, Room 13 South Africa, the HPMM Book Club and Born Free Workshop- institutions that actively engage the local community with art programmes and exhibitions regularly within the community of Soweto.
With this backdrop, the co-curators decided to create a showcase that encourages ownership of narratives by the children participating in the programme. The children will be taking the lead on the day, giving guests an exciting visual, oral and performative experience, in the form of an exhibition of paintings and drawings, along with a storytelling performance item.
The artists will take guests through a walkabout on the day, present a short musical performance as well as a storytelling item.
“What’s Your Story?” seeks to showcase the unique narratives of children told through their own lenses, paintbrushes, crayons, pencils and voices. The exhibition explores the various narratives while also presenting the children with an opportunity to take front and centre stage by presenting the programme on the day, directing the performance item and curating the visual arts exhibition.
In an age where themes such as ownership, redressing historical imbalances, youth empowerment and youth unemployment are prevalent in the daily conversations many of these kids are exposed to, “What’s Your Story?” seeks to encourage active participation by children in the arts as well as in a broader context, in the creative economy.
Featuring an array of art works by children, the showcase presents an opportunity for children to use art as a tool for engaging with society using multi-disciplinary formats.
The “What’s your story?” exhibition intends to showcase unique works by the child artists while also allowing them to be part of the curating process.
The exhibition will feature an exploration of art by children using various disciplines, such as visual art, video installations and performance art.
